Our Founder's letter to her UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Professor

Becca launched Piedmont Pennies into a business September 2020 during the COVID-19 quarantine as an MBA class project. Read a recent letter to her UNC Kenan-Flagler Entrepreneurship Professor.

Dear Professor,

I look back fondly on your class and the case studies. Specifically, one discussion in particular showed me that success comes in different "currencies" other than money.

In the case study, the female founder closed / lost her clothing line due to poor financing decisions and lack of cash flow. Most of the class thought she failed because she lost the business, lost her investment, and lost the rights to use her name in future retail endeavors.

While her outcome was unfortunate, in my mind, she didn't lose. To me, success is freedom. Freedom to create your business in the first place. Freedom to solve problems. Freedom to grow your network in the industry you love. Freedom to support your family. Freedom to give back to your community. She experienced those freedoms (perhaps not all at once, and at times a little haphazardly) and she gained valuable experience.

Many people never take the risk because they see money as the only risk and reward. When in fact, the entire time, it's more than money, it's freedom.

I'd say she won.

Stay Cheesin, Prof!
Becca

P.S. I am so thankful for my entrepreneurship course that led me to create Piedmont Pennies®
